You want no part of this diagnosis or the treatment that accompanies it. You’ve felt so overwhelmed, but life keeps going and you haven’t even had time to process the news fully. You’re so tired, overwhelmed, stuck in grief and fear of the unknown. You don’t know where to direct the anger that bubbles up: at your body? your genetics? the environment? You find yourself increasingly lost in thoughts of what this could mean for your future, as questions swirl in your mind, “Why me?”
You may even find yourself yourself delaying important medical care over time. Increasingly you’ve noticed more and more that you’re checked out of conversations, and it’s becoming more difficult to function day to day. You’ve begun to feel like you’ll never shake this. It can feel so isolating, and hopeless.
Medical trauma can result from a variety of experiences such as (but not limited to)
Life threatening events
Not being believed by a provider
Severe pain and injury
Diagnosis of a life changing illness
Invasive procedures, surgeries, or other treatments.
Everyone reacts to traumatic events differently. Even the same individual may have a different reaction to traumatic experiences throughout their life depending on any number of factors. It’s not uncommon for many people to have an immediate reaction to trauma that gradually improves over time - without therapeutic support. However, sometimes a trauma response can linger, worsen, and become a barrier to everyday functioning. This is when the assistance of a trauma-informed psychotherapist can be critical in navigating through the pain.
You don’t have to feel this way forever.
